The German Nutrition Society said that dietary fiber is of great importance to health, as this non-digestible plant fiber enhances the health of the digestive system, maintains stable blood sugar levels, and helps to feel full for a longer period. It also supports the intestinal microbiome, “beneficial bacteria,” necessary for health.
Thanks to these benefits, dietary fiber can reduce the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
The association added that food sources of dietary fiber are fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grain products, noting that the amount that should be eaten daily to benefit from the health benefits is 30 grams.
This amount is equivalent to two slices of whole grain bread, an apple, a handful of nuts, 100 grams of broccoli, and 150 grams of cooked lentils.
