Qatar Railways Company “Rail” received the “Best Innovative Idea in Energy Efficiency” award from the Tarsheed Energy and Water Efficiency Forum for the year 2024. “Rail” was crowned with this award for the “Regenerative Braking System in the Doha Metro,” which converts kinetic energy into energy. The metro adopts regenerative braking technology, which reduces the demand for energy generated using gas. This technology allows the generation of up to 46% of the energy needed by trains through the braking process, whereby the resulting energy is supplied to the system for use by the next train. In 2023, the company was able to regenerate 10,717% of megawatts per hour, which represents 9% of the total traction energy used by trains.
