The instant messaging platform WhatsApp, owned by Meta, announced that there was a technical defect that led to the sudden disabling of a number of user accounts and placing them under review, confirming that it is working to restore access to the affected accounts as soon as possible.
A number of users shared complaints on the X and Threads platforms that their accounts had been blocked or reviewed without warning, which prevented them from using the application.
The platform explained that users received a message stating that account activity and device information are subject to review to ensure compliance with the terms of use.
According to a report published by the TechCrunch website, Meta confirmed that it was aware of the problem and was working to address it, without revealing the causes of the defect or whether it was limited to specific geographical areas, indicating that some errors may occur during measures to combat misuse of the service, and that it had taken steps to restore the affected accounts.
WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly active users around the world, which makes any glitch in the service affect large numbers of users.
