Cough is one of the common health problems in children. When is it necessary to consult a doctor?
To answer this question, the “Abonit.d” website said that coughing in children is a symptom of many diseases, from the common cold to whooping cough to asthma.
The website, which is the official portal for German pharmacists, explained that in the case of a mild, dry cough without fever or other symptoms, as well as in the case of a cough accompanied by hoarseness and a mild fever, fluids, mucus-dissolving medications, and inhalation of saline solutions can help.
Serious cases
Cough requires consulting a doctor in the following serious cases:
- If the child has a chronic medical condition.
- If there are unusual breathing sounds such as wheezing or moaning.
- If the child has a severe cough, fever, abdominal pain, or a general feeling of illness.
- If the child shows signs of paleness, bluish skin, chest pain, or obvious nasal congestion in infants, an ambulance should be called immediately.
It is noteworthy that coughing in children is a vital physiological defense mechanism for the body, and not just a passing symptom. It is an involuntary reaction aimed at clearing the airways and trachea of accumulated mucus, foreign bodies, or environmental irritants.
Medically, cough is viewed as a mirror that reflects the state of the respiratory system, as its causes vary, starting from simple viral colds that affect the upper respiratory system and usually go away within days, through bacterial infections such as whooping cough, which is characterized by acute attacks, all the way to chronic conditions such as asthma, which is associated with bronchial constriction and allergies.
The most critical signs remain those associated with a lack of oxygen in the blood and the efficiency of the lungs, such as paleness or bluishness of the skin (cyanosis), which is an extreme medical emergency that means that the respiratory system is no longer able to meet the body’s oxygen needs.
