The German team defeated its Slovakian counterpart today in two sets to none in the opening round of the Davis Cup tennis tournament currently being held in China.
Marterer defeated Lucas Klein 6/4 and 7/5 in the match that took place between them at the Hengqin International Tennis Center in the Chinese city of Zhuhai.
The German team is in Group 3, which also includes the United States and Chile, and it aspires to be in either first or second place to advance to the final stage of the tournament, which will be hosted by the Spanish city of Malaga next November.
Germany will be without top seed Alexander Zverev in the group stage of the tournament, as well as injured duo Jan-Lennard Struff and Dominik Koepfer.
