Qatar Insurance announced a strategic investment in Africa Specialty Risks (ASR), a company specialized in insurance and reinsurance, which is headquartered in London and focuses its business on African markets, in a new step within the group’s strategy for international expansion, diversifying its business portfolio, and enhancing its presence in global markets.

A company statement published on the Qatar Stock Exchange website explained that the investment aims to provide a specialized platform for Qatar Insurance to access growth opportunities in African markets, and to benefit from the group’s technical and underwriting expertise, in addition to the specialized experience and deep knowledge that ASR enjoys in African markets, in a way that supports the development of new opportunities and businesses in the insurance and reinsurance sectors.

The investment comes within the framework of Qatar Insurance’s vision to expand its business outside its traditional markets, and build a more diversified portfolio with multiple and sustainable sources of growth, premiums and profits, thus enhancing its ability to create long-term value for its shareholders.
The investment also reflects the group’s orientation towards taking advantage of the growth opportunities provided by the development of the insurance sector in a number of African markets, in light of economic growth, investments in infrastructure, and increasing demand for specialized insurance and reinsurance solutions.

The investment is based on an existing working relationship between Qatar Insurance and ASR that has extended over the past years, as the group provided reinsurance coverage for part of the ASR portfolio, including ASR Syndicate business No. 2454 in the Lloyd’s market through Antares, a subsidiary of Qatar Insurance.
This relationship contributed to providing an opportunity for Qatar Insurance to work closely with the ASR team and learn about its technical and underwriting capabilities and its approach to business management in African markets, which formed a practical basis for the new investment partnership.

In this regard, Mr. Salem Khalaf Al-Mannai, CEO of Qatar Insurance Group, said that the strategic investment in Africa Specialty Risks represents a new achievement in the group’s journey towards building a more diversified and widespread business at the international level, indicating that the step comes within Qatar Insurance’s vision to continue expanding in global markets and benefit from long-term growth opportunities.
He added that the partnership combines Qatar Insurance’s global experience with ASR’s specialized knowledge in African markets, allowing access to new opportunities in the insurance and reinsurance sectors, and at the same time supports the group’s goal of diversifying the sources of premiums and profits and building a more balanced international portfolio.
Al-Mannai pointed out that Qatar Insurance views Africa as a market with important potential for growth in the insurance sector, stressing that ASR possesses the experience, local knowledge and capabilities necessary to benefit from these opportunities, and that the practical relationship existing between the two parties over the past years has provided a strong basis for building the partnership.
It is noteworthy that ASR was established in 2020, and provides specialized services in the fields of underwriting, insurance and reinsurance, with a presence and experience in a number of African markets, in addition to access to international reinsurance capabilities classified as Class A.

By investing in ASR, Qatar Insurance supports the company’s growth and development of its capabilities, while at the same time leveraging a specialized platform to enhance its access to the African market and participate in the growth opportunities provided by the development of the insurance sector on the continent.
Through this step, Qatar Insurance continues to implement its international expansion strategy in a thoughtful manner, and build a sustainable presence in selected markets, with a focus on business diversification, achieving sustainable growth, and creating long-term value for its shareholders.
