Le Monde newspaper said that a group of scientists, including prominent personalities and a Nobel Prize, gave a global invitation to discuss the potential risks of research experiences related to mirror bacteria for what could be irreplaceable or without control of the risk of eliminating life on earth.

This invitation – according to a prolonged investigation in the newspaper prepared by Nataniel Herzburg and David Larroseri – comes after the acceleration of scientific progress in the field of microorganisms capable of eliminating life if it is developed, which raised fears that it can be irreversibly used.

The investigation was defined by “mirror bacteria” as a virtual scientific idea that depends on the opposite of the molecular composition of living organisms, as biomedus such as proteins and DNA are characterized by the presence of “right or left -wing personality”, in a phenomenon called “Kerealia”, and in nature, life chose to work with only one form of these molecules, and scientists now ask: What will happen if the creatures of the opposite form or “mirror” are created for this. Molecles?

These organisms may be if produced – according to the report – are able to stay in a natural environment without being discovered or resisted by immune systems, and thus can cause major health and environmental disasters.

Terrifying

In an imagined scenario, scientists imagine that it begins with a simple and unnoticed problem in a protective suit, the researcher who used it and then gets sick is isolated, but the infection spreads quickly and becomes an epidemic, so the type of bacteria was identified, but doctors remain unable It is to spread the mysterious disease wherever it lands.

In this context, 38 scientists led by Van Cooper and David Rilman have published an article in the magazine “Science” calling for the need to think serious about the dangers of this technology, and they warned that the ability to manufacture these organisms may become possible within a few decades, which puts humanity in front of an unprecedented danger.

“I have studied health risks throughout my career, but I have never faced a problem of this size and of this danger,” says Rillman, and Cooper adds, “Although we do not know when this technology will become possible, it is better to avoid manufacturing it completely.”

Recent years have witnessed remarkable progress in the research related to mirror bacteria, as Chinese scientist Ting Zo created mirror molecular tools that enable scientists to reflect natural biological functions, and in 2025 scientific teams in Japan announced the development of the first version of “ribosome”, a machine inside the cell responsible for the production of proteins, which makes the step towards developing mirror organisms closer to reality.

Scientists warn of terrifying scenarios if this technology is out of control, because mirror bacteria, if released in the environment, may be able to overcome human and animal systems, and therefore may cause the collapse of the ecosystem, and that current drugs and antibiotics will not be able to deal with new mirror organisms, scientists say that these organisms may lead to a global crisis that goes beyond Imagination.

A promising scientific field, however

Although scientists admit that research in this field may lead to revolutionary medical discoveries, such as improving the effectiveness of medicines, they are calling for strict restrictions on experiments aimed at creating organisms capable of self -reproduction, and they call for global discussion that includes researchers, decision makers and international institutions to develop a moral and legal framework for this technology.

The first international conference is expected to discuss this issue next June at the “Pasteur Institute” in Paris with the participation of scientists, politicians and legal experts, and will be followed by two other conferences in Manchester and Singapore, in order to reach a global agreement on how to monitor and direct these research, and prevent their use in a way that may lead to disasters.

The newspaper concluded that mirror bacteria, although they represent a promising scientific field to understand the origins of life and the development of medicines, may put humanity at the same time in front of an existential threat that has not been unprecedented, and therefore the only choice for the scientific community is to move with wisdom and organization to confront the future with caution before this technology becomes a weapon against humanity.
