Taiwan…a pioneer in sports technology leads progress in the field of health

Sports technology is no longer limited to competition stadiums, but its applications have extended to homes and medical rehabilitation centers. In this field, Taiwan is employing its expertise in manufacturing, design, and computing to develop bicycles, electric bicycles, and medical training and rehabilitation equipment, in a way that enhances the quality of life and serves the health sector.

Czech cyclist Ondra Slez moved from tattooing to freestyle mountain bike competitions, and in 2026 he achieved a “wild card” to participate in the “Natural Selection Tour” in New Zealand, where he placed sixth on a bike produced by the Taiwanese company Merida, one of the largest global companies in the bicycle industry.

The importance of these achievements is not limited to sports results, but rather contributes to highlighting the capabilities of the Taiwanese industry in bicycles, sports technology and smart health care, as its products are also being used in hospitals and rehabilitation clinics to improve the speed of patients’ recovery and raise the efficiency of treatment.

Taiwan’s success in sports technology is based on the integration of its IT and manufacturing expertise, allowing the integration of sensors, artificial intelligence, cloud services and Extended Reality technologies into bicycles, fitness equipment and various sports.

It also uses its computer capabilities to analyze big data to support athletes’ performance, which has made its technologies present in international tournaments such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup.

Most components of the Merida One-Sixty FR are manufactured in Taiwan, which has the largest global pool of bicycle component suppliers, speeding up the design, testing and production processes.

This position is also based on Taiwan’s experience in manufacturing carbon fiber and fine aluminum alloy, which has contributed to the development of high-performance bicycles that compete in the most prominent global races.
