The German Health Center said that there are several reasons for tooth discoloration, some of which are external and some of which are internal.
The center explained that the external causes are foods and drinks that stain teeth, such as coffee, tea, berries, turmeric, and red beets, in addition to smoking.
Internal reasons
Internal causes include dental fillings such as amalgam fillings, antibiotics, the use of nutritional supplements containing fluoride (dental fluorosis), and tooth decay.
A change in the color of the teeth may indicate a serious problem such as liver disease, due to increased amounts of bilirubin (a yellow pigment) in the blood.
Professional whitening
The center pointed out that professional bleaching at a dentist is the most effective method for teeth whitening, as a highly concentrated bleaching agent is applied to the teeth, thus removing deep and stubborn stains effectively.
Whitening results are usually visible immediately, and can last for several months to years, depending on the care you take after your teeth are whitened.
To avoid tooth discoloration as much as possible, you should take good care of your teeth by regularly cleaning them with toothpaste and a brush at least twice a day.
For particularly good cleaning results, it is recommended to use an ultrasonic toothbrush, as it removes deeper layers of plaque and can also reach areas that are difficult to reach using the generated ultrasonic waves.
The spaces between the teeth should also be cleaned with dental floss once a day.
It is also important to clean the tongue regularly using a tongue scraper, which helps remove bacterial deposits that can accumulate on the tongue.
