Yesterday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented the German national football team’s shirt to President Donald Trump on the occasion of his birthday and the World Cup, telling him, “We are on one team.” While the leaders were meeting on the morning of the G7 summit in Evian, Merz took out the German national team’s shirt and presented it to Trump, who received it smiling in the presence of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The name “Trump” was printed on the back of the shirt next to the number 47, in reference to his being the forty-seventh president of the United States. The United States is currently participating in hosting the World Cup, along with Canada and Mexico. “Happy belated birthday,” Mertz wrote on his Instagram account. “In the end, we are on one team,” he added.
