The hoarseness is a very annoying problem, as it hinders one from communicating with others, whether in functional or personal life, so what are its causes and how can it be faced?

To answer these two questions, German Professor Christopher Bohr from the ENT clinic at Regensburg University Hospital explained that hoarseness has several reasons, including what is simple and what is dangerous.

Port explained that the simple reasons for hoarseness are:

  • Excessive strain of vocal cords, for example, due to a loud party or a long lecture
  • catch cold.
  • Smoking and drinking wine.
  • Exposure to dust in abundance.

Serious causes

As for the dangerous reasons for hoarseness, they are:

  • Esophageal reflux, as stomach acid rises to the esophagus and irritates the throat.
  • laryngitis.
  • Doctines, polyps, or bags, which hinder air flow, thus weakening vocal cords.
  • Throat cancer.
  • Also, hoarseness may be due to psychological factors, such as the so -called psychological sound loss, as those with it lose part of their voice or completely due to psychological pressure, and the symptoms range from a whisper of fraud to completely loss of sound.

Mandates to confront hoarseness

To face hoarseness, Professor Antonio-Arista Justian, chief physician in the ENT department at Straubing Hospital, recommended the following measures:

1- Moisturizing vocal cords

Since the lack of elasticity of the vocal cords causes hoarseness, it is important to restore them as possible, which can be achieved by maintaining the moisture of the vocal cords, for example using hyaluronic acid or salt meal tablets, as it increases the salt content in saliva, and thus cell moisture.

Inhalation can also be a sedative, in general, people with hoarseness should drink a lot of fluids, including warm tea such as chamomile or sage, the first has an anti -inflammatory effect, and the second has a moisturizing effect.

2- Not to exert the volume extra

When suffering from hoarseness, the sound should be protected, i.e. speaking as minimal as possible.

3- Avoid cleaning the throat and whisper

Cleaning the throat and whisper increases the pressure on the already irritated vocal cords, and in the event of mucus on the vocal cords, the cough is better than cleaning the throat.

Consult a doctor

If the hoarseness persists for more than 3 to 4 weeks, then a doctor should be consulted to determine the real cause behind the hoarseness and exclude serious diseases such as throat cancer.

This applies in particular if the hoarseness is accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulties swallowing, shortness of breath and feeling a foreign body in the throat or a knot in the throat, in addition to unjustified weight loss.
