Swiss national team and Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer announced today his retirement from international football with his country, after a 12-year career.
“After careful consideration, I have decided to end my career as goalkeeper for the Swiss national team,” Sommer, 35, said in a statement. “It has been a great honour and privilege for me to have represented my country at the highest level for 12 years and 94 international caps.”
“With the European Championships coming to an end, where I spent unforgettable years in the Bundesliga, it’s time for me to say goodbye,” added Sommer, who kept 35 clean sheets in 94 international appearances.
Sommer made his international debut on 30 May 2012, at the age of 23, under the guidance of renowned coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, during a match against Romania in Lucerne. After the World Cup in Brazil, Sommer joined German club Borussia Mönchengladbach and became the first-choice goalkeeper for the Swiss national team.
