Scientists in China are developing the world’s first pregnant robot capable of carrying the fetus for 9 months and then being born in a way that simulates the natural uterus, according to a report published by “Daily Mail”.
The new robot depends on an alternative artificial uterus that receives food through a diet intended for its participation with the fetus in a way that simulates the mechanism of placenta and the human uterus.
Dr. Chang Chiving, founder of the company, “Kaiwa Technology”, developed by the robot that the technology has already reached a stage of maturity that makes it ready to enter into its initial experimental stages, as it now needs to build a robot in order to plant the uterus in it and then receive the human fetus.
Cheving explains that his company held several talks with the authorities in the Chinese province of Guangdong in preparation for the launch of technology and the search for legal mechanisms for adapting policies and legislation in line with technology.
The Cheving Declaration caused the development of technology in a massive wave of criticism through Chinese social media platforms, as opponents believe that this technology is immoral and unnatural.
Some also see that depriving the fetus of communication with the normal mother’s womb is cruel and immoral, since the fetus needs emotional contact with the mother through the umbilical cord, as stated in the report.
On the other hand, supporters of this technology believe that it represents a suitable solution to protect mothers from the risks related to pregnancy and childbirth, adding that this technique contributes to the enrichment of society significantly.
It is reported that this is not the first time that companies have been trying to develop and use an artificial uterus technology to compensate for the natural uterus, as this was done previously, but with animals when scientists have developed a plastic bag capable of providing the fetus with the food it needs.
A group of scientists at the University of Eindhoven in 2019 also sought to develop a perception of an artificial uterus similar to a closed plastic bag connected to a natural uterus preserved in an appropriate environment that provides it with appropriate food.
Western films and cinema touched on such a future concept, specifically in the movie “The Pod Genration”, which was released in 2023 and talked about the development of a major technical technology company that makes the couple participate in pregnancy by placing it in an external capsule that can be shared between the spouses.
The report indicates that the success of such technology solves the fertility rates crisis currently suffering from Chinese society, as infertility rates in China increased to 18% in 2020 after it was 11.9% in 2007.
