His Excellency Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Energy, stressed the critical importance of modern technology in ensuring the sustainability of the competitiveness of Qatari LNG in the long term.
This came during an interactive dialogue between His Excellency and Michael Trick, Dean of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, in an exceptional meeting within the “Dean’s Lectures” series, which was followed by an open discussion with students about the most prominent current issues in the energy, technology and environment sectors.
His Excellency shared his vision on the development of the energy sector in Qatar, the country’s pivotal role in the global transition to low-carbon energy, and reviewed Qatar Energy’s approach to transitioning to low-carbon energy through responsible growth.
Pointing out that natural gas is the cleanest type of fossil fuel, and replacing coal leads to an immediate reduction in emissions.
His Excellency said: Qatar’s energy plans combine its efforts to expand the production of liquefied natural gas with the application of the best global practices used in reducing emissions, with huge projects to capture and store carbon dioxide, and with large investments in solar energy, so that we can provide the energy that the world needs in the most efficient and sustainable way.
His Excellency the Minister pointed out that building national capabilities through education represents an essential pillar for Qatar’s sustainable future. He said that education is the basis, and that building national capabilities begins with providing young people with the skills and knowledge that qualify them to contribute in various fields. By investing in their development and giving them real opportunities for growth, we empower the next generation of leaders to lead Qatar’s sustainable future.
This dialogue allowed the students to closely examine the strategic decisions that contribute to shaping the future of energy in Qatar and the world.
The Dean of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar stressed the importance of His Excellency the Minister’s dialogue with students, and said, “The goal of this series has always been to build bridges between what our students learn in the classroom, and the real challenges and opportunities that await them in the real world.” He added: “Today’s meeting confirms this approach, as it gives our students a rare opportunity to interact directly with a prominent figure in the global energy scene.”
A large part of the meeting was devoted to answering students’ questions, a format requested by His Excellency the Minister to promote direct and honest dialogue with the next generation of leaders.
Students from various academic disciplines at the university discussed with His Excellency the Minister a wide range of topics, most notably the growing role of artificial intelligence in enhancing sustainability and efficiency in the energy sector.
