Why do eyes suffer from dryness?

Many people suffer from dry eyes. What are the reasons for this? How can it be confronted?

Common causes

To answer these two questions, the German “Good Vision” Association said that the common causes of dry eyes are:

– Working in front of the screen: People who work for long periods of time in front of the screen blink at a much lower rate, sometimes only once or twice a minute. As a result, the eye’s ability to moisten tear fluid is reduced.

– Dry heating device air: Due to the dryness of the heating device air, moisture in the eyes evaporates more quickly, and cigarette smoke and air currents can negatively affect the tear layer.

– Diseases and medications: Conditions such as rheumatism or eczema can cause dry eyes, and some medications, such as beta blockers and hormonal preparations, can negatively affect the tear layer.

Important measures

The association added that dry eyes can be combated by taking the following important measures:

– When working in front of a computer screen: You should take breaks to blink at a rate of about 10 to 15 times per minute. To achieve this, you can follow the 20-20-20 rule, which involves looking at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

– Use lubricating eye drops: “Artificial tears” work to replace lost tear fluid. However, those who use these drops regularly should ensure that they are free of preservatives; Since these substances may cause dry eyes.

– Good ventilation inside the house: Regular ventilation, especially in the winter, is also beneficial for the eyes, taking into account avoiding air currents.
