Artificial intelligence companies are facing a crisis in the quality of data they need to train their models, as high-quality data is running out at a speed that does not match the companies’ needs for this data. A group of platforms and stores have emerged that allow companies to purchase human data, whether it is voices, phone calls, text messages, or even a set of photos, for a fee that seems small to some, but is a lifeline for others.
Companies can sometimes buy a person’s full real identity, including their voice and appearance, for use in generative artificial intelligence tools as they wish, according to a report published by the British newspaper The Guardian.
While both parties to this commercial relationship appear to be satisfied, the user who sells his data to artificial intelligence finds himself a party to a relationship closer to digital slavery, as the company permits everything it can buy and there are no real restrictions on its use.
The Guardian report pointed to a group of platforms that act as stores to collect human data and then sell it to companies, including a platform called “Kleed AI,” which is based in New York, and pays $14 for a set of video clips that show a person walking.
The report confirmed that the sale of data is not limited to those residing in developing countries only, but also extends to those residing in America and even some celebrities.
