This week, Uzbekistan confirms its status as an international destination for hosting sporting events, as it receives more than 150 of the world’s elite fencers, representing more than 20 countries, to participate in the Women’s Saber World Cup competitions.
The tournament will be held in the modern Olympic City Complex, which is the largest sports facility in Central Asia, and the approved site to host the Fourth Asian Youth Games in 2029. This event represents a prominent milestone for saber sport at the international level, with the participation of an elite group of female players, including Olympic star Zeynep Daibekova, and the former world number one in the junior women’s category, Gulistan Berdibaeva. Their participation on home soil is a historic moment for Uzbekistan, and an opportunity to highlight its proven ability to organize world-class sporting events.
During the opening ceremony, Otabek Umarov, First Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan and Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia, said:
“We are delighted to welcome the world’s best fencers in the women’s category to Tashkent, to experience Uzbek hospitality, rich cultural heritage and world-class sporting facilities. We are grateful to the International Fencing Federation for its confidence in our ability to organize an outstanding event.”
The Women’s Saber World Cup is an important stop on the global fencing agenda, as it brings together players from Europe, Asia and the Americas. The competitions continue over three days, and include individual and group competitions, and conclude with final matches for gold medals on the last day. The tournament represents a major station for female players to gain ranking points, and an opportunity to compete against Olympic champions and continental champions.
Hosting the world’s elite duels in the heart of Central Asia is an opportunity to inspire the next generation of female athletes, in line with the “Healthy Person – Healthy Nation” initiative, which aims to promote physical activity and encourage healthy lifestyles throughout the country.
