At a time when the world is witnessing rapid transformation and increasing challenges, trusted technology partnerships are more important than ever. As the world’s leading independent center for semiconductor research and development, AIMEC, which opened its new headquarters in Qatar Science and Technology Park, has been pioneering collaborative solutions in deep technologies for more than forty years.
AIMEC sees its new headquarters – which will be officially opened later this year as its base in the Middle East – as an important opportunity to contribute to enhancing the role of deep technologies as one of the main drivers of long-term economic diversification in Qatar and the region, with promising applications extending to the sectors of energy, transportation, health care, and others.
AIMEC’s partnership with the State of Qatar is based on a long-term vision, as it works, by linking academia with the industrial sector, to support its trusted partners – Invest Qatar and the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council – in building an integrated system capable of achieving sustainable growth and prosperity.
IMEC’s new headquarters in Qatar Oasis is expected to provide great opportunities for cooperation between various actors. The oasis includes more than 400 companies, including at least 50 companies specialized in the field of deep technologies.
Through this new R&D center, IMEC will contribute to strengthening one of Qatar’s key competitive advantages in light of the rapid growth of the global semiconductor industry, which is expected to rise in value from approximately US$700 billion in 2024 to US$1.6 trillion by 2030. This center will not be a manufacturing facility, but rather a regional engine of innovation that supports the development of fundamental design tools for emerging technologies, which are a pivotal element in the design of electronic chips needed to enable the next generation of technology-based solutions. Artificial intelligence. It will also be the first independent center of its kind in the region specialized in research and development in the field of semiconductors.
In this context, Max Mergoli, CEO of Global Development, Partnerships and Projects at IMEC, says: “In Qatar, we have already recruited the first group of talent. We are working to build a strong base of specialists within a dynamic system that allows researchers to work in an innovation-incubating environment, access advanced facilities, participate in advanced research, register patents, and cooperate at the global level.”
Mirgoli adds: “We do not view IMEC Qatar as an independent center in its own right, but rather as an extension of an existing global ecosystem to a region that has growing ambitions in the field of deep technologies. Over more than four decades, IMEC has succeeded in building an integrated international network linking an elite group of researchers.
