The Qatar Investment Authority and Activit Capital, an American company specializing in investing in growth stocks in the fields of energy technologies and smart infrastructure, announced that Activit Capital has joined the Qatar Investment Authority’s $3 billion holding fund program.
Activate Capital invests in companies during their various stages of growth, starting from Series B financing rounds until the pre-initial public offering stage, with a focus on the energy and electricity sectors, ground and space transportation technologies, the digital industry, and the ability of supply chains to withstand crises and adapt to climate change.
The commitment of the Qatar Investment Authority, through the Holding Fund Program, will contribute to supporting Activate Capital in moving forward with its investment strategy in countries of the Global South, with a focus on sectors that are witnessing a fundamental shift towards digitization and decarbonization.
Within the framework of this partnership, Activate Capital intends to open its first international office in Doha, which includes an elite group of senior investment specialists, including a partner who will focus on the Qatari market. The company will also seek to attract local, Qatari and international talents to form a diverse and highly competent team, thus enhancing the position of the State of Qatar as a platform for investment and innovation throughout the global south.
The holding fund program, which was launched by the Qatar Investment Authority in February 2024, aims to attract the most prominent international venture capital companies to the State of Qatar, strengthen ties and knowledge exchange with the global venture capital system, and accelerate the pace of development of emerging companies in Qatar and the region.
In this context, Dr. Mohsen Pirzada, Director of Funds Management at the Qatar Investment Authority, said: “The Qatar Investment Authority launched the Holding Fund Program to strengthen the ties between the State of Qatar and the global venture capital system. Activate Capital has extensive experience in the targeted sectors, which supports our ambition to consolidate Qatar’s position as a leading center for innovation, entrepreneurship and long-term investment.”
For his part, Anoop Jacob, founding partner of Activate Capital, said: “We are pleased to welcome the Qatar Investment Authority as a limited partner and a member of our Limited Partners Advisory Committee. We agree with the Qatar Investment Authority that technology-based solutions will play a pivotal role in reshaping infrastructure systems globally. We look forward to building a long-term partnership that links our portfolio, investment strategy, and our upcoming office in Doha with the growing innovation ecosystem in Qatar.”
Activate Capital is the latest venture capital firm to join the Holding Fund Programme, reflecting the continued growth of the program and the continued interest of major international investors in Qatar and the region. Activate Capital’s focus on the climate, energy and industrial infrastructure sectors also contributes to enriching the sectoral expertise within the program, which directly supports the Qatar National Vision 2030 and highlights the vital role that venture capital plays in financing sustainable innovation.
