A recent study revealed that excessive intake of antibiotics increases the risk of children with allergies and asthma as they age.
A research team from the universities of New York, Standofford and Rutgers in the United States said that the reason for this may be due to the change of microbial composition in the stomach, caused by eating large amounts of antibiotics.
In the context of the study, published by the scientific journal Journal of Infection Deceases specializing in infectious diseases research, the researchers examined the data of more than a million children with a study of the effect of taking antibiotics on more than 10 different conditions.
According to the study, it was found that eating antibiotics in childhood increases the risk of asthma by 24%, and the risk of food allergies by 3% in later stages of life.
The study did not show any effect of antibiotics on Celiac Disease, bowel infections, hyperactivity syndrome, distraction or autism.
The website “Health Day”, which specializes in medical research, quoted members of the study team as saying that “antibiotics play a major role in treating different bacterial infections, but doctors must be careful when prescribing these drugs for children under two years of age, because they may cause healthy complications in the long term.”
