The Asian Olympic Council confirmed the candidacy of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani as a single candidate for the position of the President of the Asian Olympic Council, after the end of the official deadline specified to apply for candidacy at five o’clock yesterday evening (Kuwait time), without receiving the council for any other nominations.
The candidacy of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan expresses his wide support at the continent level, and reflects the confidence of the Asian Olympic Committees in his ability to lead a new stage of development and integration in the Asian and international sport march.
His Excellency is currently the head of the Qatar Olympic Committee, along with the position of First Vice President of the National Olympic Committees (Anuk). He played a pivotal role in consolidating Qatar’s position on the map of global sport, and in developing the International Olympic Movement, by focusing on the development of athletes, institutional excellence, and expanding regional partnerships.
This candidacy comes in the aftermath of the announcement of the current council chairman, Raja Rander Singh, that his presidential term is not completed for health reasons, provided that the upcoming presidential elections will be held on January 26, 2026 in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent.
The Qatar Olympic Committee confirms that this Asian consensus on the candidacy of His Excellency Sheikh Joaan reflects the aspirations of the Asian Olympic Family towards a brighter future for sport on the continent, and expresses a real commitment to the principles of participation and justice, and respect for the diversity that distinguishes the Asian sports scene.
The committee renews its commitment to support the sport development in Asia, and the active contribution to the stability and development of the Asian Olympic Council in the next stage, led by His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani.
