Apple revealed that iOS 27 comes with a feature that relies on two different voice dictation systems, and the system available to the user varies according to the specifications of the device he is using.

If the user owns an iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air and uses the beta version of the system, he gets a more advanced voice dictation experience, but Apple has not activated this feature by default, which means that many users do not know about its existence.

According to a report published by the Digital Trends website, Apple provides users of supported devices with a feature called Advanced Dictation Preview, which is based on the AFM Core Advanced artificial intelligence model, which is the same model used to play the new expressive sounds for the Siri assistant.

One of the most prominent advantages of the feature is that it works entirely on the device without the need for an Internet connection, and it also automatically adds punctuation marks and capital letters while speaking, eliminating the need to pronounce words such as “comma” or “period” while dictating.

Despite the improvements the feature offers in speech recognition accuracy, Apple has kept it disabled by default because it is still in an experimental phase, with the aim of collecting feedback from users who activate it manually to improve its performance before the final launch.

The reason for its limitation to specific devices is due to hardware requirements, as the AFM Core Advanced model requires at least 12 GB of random access memory (RAM) to run locally on the device, so it is not available on the standard iPhone 17 phone, which comes with only 8 GB of memory.
Accordingly, users of supported devices can activate the feature from settings to benefit from a faster, more accurate and intelligent voice dictation experience.
