This year, the Aspire Academy for Sports Excellence celebrates its twentieth anniversary, confirming its position as one of the most prominent sports academies in the world, which has always contributed to preparing a new generation of Qatari sports champions.
The Academy, which was founded in 2004, announced, in a statement on this occasion, a series of events and activities during this month that highlight its pioneering path and unique achievements in developing sports talent according to the highest international standards, and highlight the Academy’s commitment to continuing its mission in developing the next generation of sports champions. The statement pointed out that the Aspire Academy has achieved unprecedented success in developing athletes at international standards and contributing to consecrating the Qatari sporting heritage, which has become a source of pride, at a time when the academy’s graduates are achieving wonderful feats in various sports and at various levels.
The influence and legacy of the Aspire Academy has remained prominent over two decades, during which many of the academy’s graduates achieved Olympic medals and achievements at the level of Asian and world championships, in addition to 3 titles in football championships.
These and other achievements achieved by more than 642 sports graduates are clear evidence of the growing influence of Aspire Academy and its remarkable role in developing sports talent over 20 years.
Ivan Bravo, General Manager of Aspire Academy, said in a statement that the celebration is an important occasion to highlight the progress that Aspire has made at all levels and at the level of the many athletes who have been supported to achieve success through Aspire Academy programs.
Bravo said: “We are very proud of our student-athletes who have shown a steadfast determination to reach new and advanced levels through excellence and excellence in various sports.”
He added: “Aspire Academy stands at the forefront as a fundamental driver of Qatari sports, with a focus on performance in football and its sciences. The Director General of Aspire Academy explained that the comprehensive approach followed by the Academy in developing athletes includes continuous support for its students even after graduation, and student-athletes enjoy experiences at the highest level and provide a unique blend of international experiences to the Academy.
For his part, Mr. Ali Salem Afifa, Deputy Director General of Aspire Academy, said: “The journey began with an ambitious vision and this vision crystallized into a sports academy of international standards that was the main driver of sports and changed the concept of sports in the State of Qatar.”
Afifa added: “The impact of the Aspire Academy has extended beyond just winning medals and winning cups. We have established a sustainable system for development, not only for prominent athletes, but also for members of society who represent the State of Qatar with pride, honor and distinction.”
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the academy, many events were prepared to demonstrate Aspire’s commitment to achieving its mission to develop the next generation of Qatari champions in various sports.
The celebration includes community activities in which employees and students participate in competitions, talks, seminars, and forums among graduates, among other events.
Aspire Academy currently includes 273 sports students in various sports disciplines and programmes, and the Academy continues to work with the highest standards of excellence on both the sports and academic sides, as witnessed by the Council of International Schools, which granted a certificate of accreditation in 2016 in appreciation of what Aspire Academy offers.
To date, 642 student-athletes have graduated from Aspire Academy, many of whom have had the honor of representing Qatar in various international sporting competitions.
Among the most prominent achievements achieved by many graduates of the Aspire Academy is that Olympic high jump champion Moataz Barshim won several Olympic medals for Qatar, along with Qatari national football team star Akram Afif, who won the Asian Player of the Year award twice in 2019 and 2024, and is the third player in the tournament. Asian football history has won the award twice.
Abdulkarim Hassan also won the same award in 2018, contributing to the impact of the legacy of the Aspire Academy and embodying the brilliance of Qatari football in Asia.
In addition, Almoez Ali, the current Qatari national team striker, broke a continental record that had stood for 23 years in the name of Iranian player Ali Daei, when he scored 9 goals in the 2019 Asian Cup, becoming the player who scored the most in a single edition in the history of the continental tournament.
The Aspire Academy is closely linked to all of Qatar’s national teams, from youth to the senior team, as it includes the headquarters of the U-17 and U-20 teams and the senior team in the academy’s Football Performance Centre.
