Wang Liping, a researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Sunday that the rate of infection with the human respiratory virus known as “HMBV”, which is similar to influenza, is declining in northern China, amid international concerns about the possibility of infection. pandemic.

HMBV, which belongs to the same family as the respiratory syncytial virus, causes flu or cold-like symptoms, including fever, cough, and nasal congestion.

These symptoms often go away on their own, but they may lead to lower respiratory tract diseases in children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.

Wang said, during a press conference held by the National Health Commission of China, “HMBV is not a new virus, but has been spreading among humans for at least several decades.”

Wang added that the increase in the number of cases of infection with the virus in recent years, which was first discovered in the Netherlands in 2001, is due to improved detection methods.

Wang confirmed, “At present, the rate of positive cases in detecting the HMBV virus is changing, as the rate is declining in provinces located in northern China, and the rate among patients aged 14 years and under has begun to decline.”
