The country’s consumer price index for last August reached 107.47 points, up by 0.34 percent compared to July 2024, and by 1.15 percent compared to the same month in 2023.
The index, which measures inflation, includes 12 main groups of consumer goods, under which 737 goods and services fall, and was calculated on a base year of 2018, according to the results calculated from the Household Income Expenditure Survey data (2017-2018).
The National Planning Council said in a statement today that the monthly increase is attributed to the increase in five groups: the communications group by 9.23 percent, followed by the food and beverages group by 1.29 percent, the other goods and services group by 0.77 percent, the transportation group by 0.28 percent, and the restaurants and hotels group by 0.27 percent.
As for the decrease, it occurred in the clothing and footwear group by 1.59 percent, followed by the entertainment and culture group by 1.24 percent, the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels group by 0.72 percent, and the furniture and household appliances group by 0.14 percent, while there was no change in the tobacco, health and education groups.
On the other hand, the statement attributed the annual increase when comparing last August with the same month in 2023 (annual change) to the increase in six groups: the entertainment and culture group by 10.65 percent, the other goods and services group by 5.30 percent, the communications group by 3.51 percent, the restaurants and hotels group by 2.54 percent, the education group by 1.77 percent, and the transportation group by 1.02 percent.
The indices of the rest of the basket groups showed a decrease, as the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels group recorded a decrease of 3.74 percent, the health group recorded a decrease of 1.63 percent, the furniture and household appliances group recorded a decrease of 1.58 percent, the clothing and footwear group recorded a decrease of 1.22 percent, and the food and beverages group recorded a decrease of 0.88 percent, while there was no change in the tobacco group.
When calculating the consumer price index for August 2024, after excluding the housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels group, the figure reached 111.52 points, recording an increase of 0.58 percent, compared to the previous month (July 2024), and an increase of 2.31 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2023.
