Argentine Lionel Messi is targeting new records if he participates in the final match of the Copa America 2024, currently being held in the United States, which brings together Argentina and Colombia at dawn tomorrow, Monday, at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida.
Messi, 37, will become the player with the most appearances in the finals of the tournament at the national team level if he plays for his country against Colombia in the final.
Messi is preparing to participate in his fifth final of the continental tournament, after participating with Argentina in the Copa America final in the (2007, 2015, 2016 and 2021) editions, to share the record with his retired compatriot Javier Mascherano, who participated in the tournament finals in the years (2004, 2007, 2015 and 2016).
Messi has scored (14) goals in his Copa America career so far, after the goal he scored against Canada during the semi-finals of the current edition of the tournament.
If Lionel Messi scores three goals (a hat-trick) against Colombia in the final, he will achieve a new personal record, sharing the lead as the tournament’s historical scorers, currently held by the Brazilian Thomas da Silva, known as “Bezinho”, and the Argentine Norberto Mendez, who top the tournament’s scorers list with (17) goals each.
The Argentine national team aspires to win the Copa America 2024 title, for the second time in a row and the 16th time in its history, in order to hold the record as the team with the most wins in the tournament, which it currently shares with the Uruguayan national team.
