In “Al Jazeera Health” we provide in-depth coverage of the health situation in the Gaza Strip under the Israeli aggression and targeting of health institutions and health workers.
The coverage was worked on by our network of correspondents in Gaza and the Health Newsroom team in Doha, and included field reports, articles and interviews with officials and victims.
The coverage shows – beyond any doubt – the Israeli army systematically targeting hospitals and health centres.
The World Health Organization said that Israeli forces were carrying out a “systematic dismantling of the health system” in northern Gaza. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights described a “pattern of attacks” that “begins with Israeli air strikes, is followed by ground raids and the detention of patients and staff” and leaves hospitals inoperable.
Even before the current Israeli aggression, the health system in Gaza suffered a number of difficulties resulting from the siege that lasted for more than 16 years since 2007, which left the infrastructure and health services facing major difficulties, with the scarcity of medical services and specialized sub-technology, and the import of medical equipment and supplies became The situation is more difficult due to the siege.
During this Israeli aggression, which began on October 7, 2023, the Israeli government announced a complete siege of Gaza. The result was the collapse of the health care system, and the destruction of many hospitals due to air strikes and bombing. Other hospitals became a haven for displaced residents seeking safety, in addition to the shortage of medical staff who were martyred or injured outside the hospital.
Palestinian health care workers showed a great deal of resilience and dedication, despite these catastrophic conditions.
Figures indicate that there are about 350,000 patients suffering from chronic conditions in Gaza, including cancer, diabetes, chronic kidney failure, and heart failure, and the Israeli aggression has prevented those with these conditions from obtaining health care. In our coverage, we documented the stories of some people suffering from chronic diseases in Gaza.
