Germany national football team player Thomas Muller has announced his retirement from international football.
“After 14 years and 131 caps, I have decided to end my international career with the German national team,” Muller, who won the World Cup with his country in 2014, said in a statement on social media today.
He added: I would like to thank all the fans and members of the national team, thank you for your support throughout the past years.
Muller’s announcement of his retirement from international football came hours after the end of the 2024 European Cup in Germany, which was the player’s last tournament with his country’s national team.
The German team bid farewell to the tournament in the quarter-finals after losing to its Spanish counterpart, which won the title yesterday, Sunday.
Müller made his debut for the German national team in March 2010, and has played 131 international matches, placing him third on the list of players with the most appearances for the national team, behind Lothar Matthaus (150 matches) and Miroslav Klose (137 matches).
Muller’s greatest achievement with Germany was winning the 2014 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, a journey that saw Germany beat Brazil (7/1) in the semi-finals, with Muller scoring the opening goal in this match.
