Some people suffer from the inability to burp. What does this indicate?

To answer this question, Dr. Alexander Mainka said that the inability to belch indicates what is called “Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction,” which is a dysfunction that occurs in the muscles of the upper esophagus.

bloating and nausea

The chief physician at the Charité Hospital’s Audiology and Speech Pathology Clinic in Berlin explained that in addition to the inability to burp, symptoms of this disease, known as R-CPD, include abdominal bloating, feeling unwell, nausea, and chest pain, especially after eating.

Symptoms also include audible and annoying gurgling sounds over the chest or in the lower neck area, which causes great embarrassment to the patient.

Botox injection

Dr. Mainka noted that “regressive cricopharyngeal dysfunction” is treated by injecting the upper esophageal sphincter (the inferior cricopharyngeal muscle), which is located just behind the larynx, with Botox, which helps the muscle regain its function.
