Oman- On behalf of King Abdullah II of Jordan, Prince Talal bin Muhammad honored the researchers who won the Hussein Cancer Research Award for the years 2023 and 2024, in the presence of the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, Princess Ghida Talal.

The honor included 13 Arab research scientists residing in various parts of the world, out of 472 researchers who applied for the award from more than 20 countries, in recognition of their influential contributions to cancer research.

In her speech at the ceremony, Princess Ghida Talal said, “We established the Hussein Prize for Cancer Research for a specific goal, which is to launch Arab scientific initiatives that will be the basic basis for our progress and not be satisfied with Western research, and tonight, we celebrate Arab scientists and researchers who have distinguished themselves in cancer research, and we honor them as symbols of perseverance.” Creativity and innovation.”

The award was given to a group of brilliant minds in the field of research. In 2024, the Lifetime Achievement Award – the international track was won by Professor Dr. Muhammad Muhti from Saint Antoine Hospital in France, and in the regional track to Professor Dr. Randa Hamada from the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain.

The Emerging Researcher Award – International Track was awarded to Dr. Bishoy Feltz from Weill Cornell Medical College in the United States of America, and in the Regional Track to Dr. Muhammad Abu Faraj from University of Jordan Hospital in Jordan.

The Promising Researcher Grant was won by Dr. Ola Thabet from Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357 in Egypt, and Dr. Adhari Al Zaabi from Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman.

As for the year 2023, the Lifetime Achievement Award – the International Track was won by Professor Dr. Tony Choueiri from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States of America, and in the Regional Track by Professor Dr. Ali Shams El-Din from the Naif Bassil Cancer Institute at the American University of Beirut.

The Emerging Researcher Award – International Track was awarded to Professor Dr. Hatem Abdel Azim from the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Mexico, and in the Regional Track to Dr. Yaqoub Yousef from the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan.

The Promising Researcher Scholarship was won by Dr. Hadeel Halalsha from the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan, and Dr. Heba Al-Hajj from the American University of Beirut.

The Outstanding Academic Program Award was awarded to the health technology assessment program at the hospital level at the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan.

The Hussein Prize for Cancer Research was launched in 2020, to enhance cancer research efforts in the Arab world, and in memory of King Hussein bin Talal, who has always believed in the importance of cancer research.

The award honors distinguished Arab researchers in the field of research, whether they are researchers with long experience or promising ones.

The award aims to raise the level of Arab research and develop it in order to understand the characteristics of cancer in our Arab region, so that we can confront and overcome cancer with advanced scientific methods.

Vision

The vision of the award is to enable health systems and researchers in the Arab world to raise the level of innovative cancer research in the Arab region.

The award celebrates pioneers in cancer research from medical personnel and leading institutions in the Arab world who have achieved outstanding and distinguished achievements in all areas of cancer research, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care.

The award aims to encourage the preparation of innovative research by individual researchers and/or teams of researchers in the Arab world, to contribute to bridging the gap in research at the regional level, to honor and support cancer research efforts, and to enhance cooperation between individual researchers, teams of researchers, and institutions in the Arab and Western worlds. .

The Hussein Award for Cancer Research includes the following branches:

1- Promising Researcher Award

The Al Hussein Promising Researcher Grant provides funding for two research proposals completed in the Arab world by promising young researchers in any field related to cancer, through funding selected projects worth $100,000.

Over the course of two years, the Promising Researcher Scholarship seeks to inspire the new generation of talented researchers and provide them with the necessary resources, stimulating environment and support to prepare cutting-edge research in the Arab world.

2- Emerging Researcher Award

The Emerging Researcher Award is granted within the Hussein Award for Cancer Research to honor researchers at the beginning of their careers (under the age of 45) for their influential and creative contributions to cancer research.

The award includes two tracks:

  • The regional track honors young researchers working in the region.
  • The international track honors young researchers of Arab origins who work outside the region.

The prize value is $20,000.

3- Lifetime Achievement Award

This award includes two tracks:

  • Regional conference to honor Arab researchers working in the region.
  • International conference to honor Arab researchers working outside the region.

The prize value is $30,000.
