American tennis player Coco Gauff, ranked second in the world, bid farewell to the women’s singles competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after her surprising loss to Croatian Donna Vekic in two sets to none, today, in the round of sixteen.
The Croatian player, ranked 21st in the world, succeeded in presenting a distinguished level through which she won the match with a score of 7-6 and 6-2, qualifying for the quarter-finals and continuing her journey successfully in search of achieving an Olympic medal.
Donna Vekic will meet the winner of the match between Greece’s Maria Sakkari and Ukraine’s Maria Kostyuk, which will be held later today.
In turn, German Angelique Kerber defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez, in two sets without a response, 6-4 and 6-3, in a match that lasted for an hour and 25 minutes, so that the German player continued her journey successfully and advanced to the quarter-finals in search of an achievement in her last Olympics, as Kerber, who won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016, confirmed that she will retire after the Paris Olympics.
