Researchers said during a Vienna meeting of the European Association to study diabetes that cannabis users become more likely to develop the second type of this disease by 4 times compared to non -abusers.
Using electronic records of 54 health organizations in Europe and the United States, the researchers compared 86,414 patients who have hemp – they range from those who use it in an accidental manner and those who add to it – with the same number of non -users.
Over a period of 5 years of follow -up, 2.2% of hemp users have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, compared to 0.6% of non -users.
After the researchers took into account the lifestyle of the study participants and their health factors, they found that cannabis users were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non -users by approximately 4 times.
The study cannot prove that hemp causes diabetes. Researchers did not have details about individuals’ use of cannabis, how they described their use of medical records, and other factors that may have affected the results.
However, the head of the study, Dr. Ibrahim Kamel from the Boston Medical Center – said in a statement – that the results “highlight the importance of integrating awareness of the dangers of diabetes in the treatment of the disorder of this substance and advice on it, as well as the need to routinely speak with patients about the hemp so that they can understand the dangers of diabetes in general and the potential need to monitor their metabolism.”
