The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) has issued a decision to mobile telecom service providers – Ooredoo Qatar and Vodafone Qatar – to switch to high-speed Time Division Duplex (TDD) network technologies in the 2.6 GHz frequency band, with the aim of enhancing the performance of public mobile networks in the State of Qatar. The decision issued by the CRA achieves optimal utilization of this vital available spectrum, ensures its consistent use in the Arabian Gulf region, and in the future will lead to improving the experience of telecom consumers in the State of Qatar through the use of the latest 4G and 5G network technologies.
This approach adopted by the Communications Regulatory Authority to switch using dual-time division technology is in line with the recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union, and standards issued by international bodies and organizations concerned with standardization to support 4G and 5G technology. The new technology provides more efficiency in the use of the frequency spectrum, and greater flexibility in its allocation, which contributes to enhancing the ability of service providers to provide faster services with higher quality to meet the increasing demands for telecommunications services in the State of Qatar.
Under the CRA decision, mobile service providers are required to cease all operations using the current Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) technology and migrate to the new technology by March 31, 2025, and ensure that their networks are ready for this transition to provide a distinctive high-speed data service experience in the State of Qatar. Each service provider will work to ensure that the impact of this transition on the quality of services is minimized, with noticeable improvements expected once the transition is complete. Consumers can contact their service provider if they encounter an issue with one of their mobile services.
Through this step, the Communications Regulatory Authority confirms its commitment to ensuring that consumers have access to advanced, innovative and reliable telecommunications services, in support of Qatar National Vision 2030 and its Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030, which places improving the quality of life of Qatar’s residents and providing world-class telecommunications services at the forefront of priorities.
