The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council affirms that the GCC countries are committed to sustainable development and enhancing international security and stability

Mr. Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, stressed the importance of the Future Summit at this sensitive time, and the necessity of strengthening international cooperation to confront current global challenges and achieve peace and sustainable development.

This came during his speech at the Future Summit, which was held last night, at the United Nations headquarters in New York State, on the sidelines of the work of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly in its 79th session.

He pointed out that the Future Summit represents an opportunity to reaffirm common principles and enhance joint action, through more effective and influential multilateral frameworks, especially in light of the challenges that affect sustainable development globally.

He pointed out that international indicators show a slowdown in the implementation of sustainable development goals, as more than 30 percent of them have not achieved significant progress. However, the GCC countries have placed sustainable development at the top of their priorities, through national visions and joint Gulf action programmes, which reflects their commitment. By implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, the Paris Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Plan, stressing the importance of the development role of the GCC countries through international partnerships and providing humanitarian aid to more than 90 countries around the world.

He also expressed the Gulf Cooperation Council’s support for the principle of strengthening international peace and security contained in the Future Charter, and the commitment of the GCC states to resolve disputes by peaceful means and respect for the sovereignty of states, noting the necessity of finding a just solution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.

He stressed the importance of strengthening the international system in a way that suits the needs of current and future generations, calling for concerted efforts to keep pace with developments and ensure that these needs are met, stressing that the Gulf Cooperation Council is ready to cooperate with all parties to implement the outcomes of the future summit.

In conclusion, he pointed out the congruence of views between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Future Charter with regard to security and peace, as the GCC countries recently launched the Gulf Cooperation Council vision for regional security, which is in line with the Future Charter and aims to achieve international security and peace. He stressed the commitment of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to continue their efforts to support stability. And sustainable development in the region and the world as a whole.
