The German “Prodent” initiative said that burning tongue has several causes, the most prominent of which is burning mouth syndrome.

The dental health initiative explained that in addition to burning the tongue, the symptoms of this syndrome also include a feeling of bitterness or a metallic taste, dry mouth, and a bad odor from the mouth, noting that the symptoms of the syndrome extend to the palate, cheeks, and oral mucosa.

Vitamin and mineral deficiency

“Brodent” added that burning tongue may also be due to a deficiency of some important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, vitamin C, folic acid, or iron.

A burning tongue may also indicate a congenital dysfunction of the salivary glands, an allergy to some active ingredients in toothpaste, a fungal infection, or a herpes infection.

menopause

Burning tongue is also a common health problem for women during menopause, due to the hormonal changes that occur in the body at this age and the psychological pressure that accompanies them.

In addition, the causes of burning tongue may lie in psychological illnesses such as depression or schizophrenia.

gentle mouthwash

The initiative stressed the need to consult a dentist as soon as possible to determine the real cause behind the burning tongue and undergo treatment in a timely manner, noting that the severity of the burning can be reduced by using a gentle mouthwash containing sage or chamomile.

It is also important to stimulate saliva secretion by drinking plenty of fluids and chewing sugar-free gum, as well as stopping smoking.
