The museums of Qatar and the Hong Kong Palace Museum opened the exhibition “The Wonders of the Imperial Carpet: Masterpieces of the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha”, a prominent exhibition that explores the artistic and cultural ties between the Islamic and Chinese civilizations.
The exhibition will continue until October 6 at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, the first exhibition in Hong Kong to offer a comprehensive extrapolation of the Islamic Imperial Empire and the broader artistic exchanges that took place across the geographical areas over the centuries.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of distinguished personalities and guests from Qatar and Hong Kong, including Mr. Liu Kong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Palace Museum in Hong Kong; And the Excellency Sheikha Noura Khalifa Al Thani, the Consul General of the State of Qatar in Hong Kong; And Mrs. Sheikha Nasser Al -Nasr, Director of the Museum of Islamic Art; And Saeed Al -Din, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund in Hong Kong; Mrs. Betty Fong, CEO of the West Colon Cultural Region Authority; And Dr. Louis Ing, director of the Palace Museum in Hong Kong.
The exhibition “The Wonders of the Imperial Carpet” includes approximately 90 of the masterpieces of the pieces, including holdings of imperial carpets, ceramics, manuscripts, metal artifacts, and tattoos. The main exhibits include pieces of the famous collection of the Museum of Islamic Art, as well as cutting a secondary museum from the Palace Museum in Beijing and the Palace Museum in Hong Kong. The exhibition follows the cultural exchanges that took place between the Safavid Iran, the Mongolian India and the Ottoman Turkey between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, which were formed through diplomacy, immigration and global trade networks.
The exhibition is one of the legacy of the “Cultural Years” initiative in Qatar, and it is one of the main achievements of cooperation that followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Qatar Museums during the first international cultural summit in Hong Kong in 2024. The exhibition represents the first occasion in which many of these artifacts are presented outside Qatar.
The Museum of Islamic Art, through this pioneering cooperation, reaffirms its mission in preserving, studying and publishing Islamic art throughout the ages and countries. The “imperial carpet wonders” exhibition provides a rare opportunity to experience the artistic excellence of ancient Islamic breeds, and to meditate on the deep historical ties between cultures. By presenting these artistic masterpieces to a new audience, the Museum of Islamic Art continues to enhance understanding between cultures, and highlight the permanent importance of Islamic artistic heritage on the global scene.
