Treating back pain in an innovative and effective way

A new Australian study revealed that helping people with chronic lower back pain to better understand their condition achieves great benefits for the patient that extends up to 3 years.

The study reached this by providing a special training in reducing back pain in 7 sessions of cognitive functional therapy by trained physiotherapists.

The aim of these sessions was to give patients the skills needed to deal with their pain, and to build their self -confidence to move and practice routine activities that bring them back to normal life.

Cognitive functional therapy focuses on the condition of each patient in a special way that suits him, and directs individuals towards managing their condition by targeting psychological and social biological obstacles that prevent recovery, and encourages the patient to face fear through exposure to the painful and frightening movements that the patient avoids.

Cognitive functional treatment aims to bring about a permanent change, by changing the lifestyle of patients by training individuals in practicing gradual physical activities based on their preferences, developing healthy sleep habits, and improving social interaction.

“It can cause anxiety and fear, and lead people to excessive protection of their bodies and avoid the usual movements,” says Professor Peter Osoulvan, co -author of the study and professor at John Curtin College of Health Sciences at Kirten University in Australia.

How do you face your pain?

The study was conducted in centers in Sydney and Birth in Australia, and its results were published in the Lancet Journal of Rheumatic Medicine on August 5, and the Yurrick Alert website was written about.

Participated in the study with adults with pain in the lower back that lasted for more than 3 months and restricted the patient’s physical activity, and the average back pain of no less than 4 on a scale from 0 to 10.

The participants were randomly distributed to 3 groups, the first group received the usual care, and the second group received only cognitive career, while the last group received cognitive career in addition to vital feedback, a method that works to enhance sensory feedback, allowing individuals to adjust physical functions that are usually consciously involuntary.

Cognitive career only and cognitive career in addition to biological feedback was more effective than the usual care in reducing the restriction of activity after 3 years.

“This is the first wide and high -quality study looking for a long -term effect of exercise therapy, and its effectiveness and continued effect appear,” said the study researcher Professor Mark Hancock, a professor of physical therapy at the University of Macquari at Australia.

“Things such as massage, manual therapy and medicines can provide short -term control of symptoms, but in the long run, mental and physical therapy methods that give patients the skills and trust needed to treat themselves are much more effective,” Professor Hancock added.

But what causes back pain? Here are 5 of the most common causes of pain, according to the British Independent newspaper.

Muscle strain and liga

One of the common causes of back pain is injury, such as muscle tension. “The first seizure of back pain is usually associated with a sudden injury,” says Sam Bahid, a physiotherapist.

“After returning to the gym after a break, for example, sudden movement can cause an injury and back pain, because your body may forget what to do.”

Muscle strain and ligament twisting are usually diagnosed through the physical examinations that physiotherapists or doctors are usually performed.

“These physical tests usually include movement, muscles and ligaments tests,” says Mick Thaker, a qualified physiotherapist, and a professor of pain at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Bone

The osteoporosis – also known as “Osteoarthritis” – is the most prevalent bone disease, which is an unfinished damage that affects arthritis tissue, which reduces friction caused by permanent joint movement, and works as a pillow to protect bone.

The changes related to age in the spine and associated with spinal boneless separation in the name of the disease of the spine.

Professor Thaker explains that the bone separation “affects the joints of the glass cartilage. The spine joints contain a glass cartilage, and then they are vulnerable to the boneless.”

Professor Thaker says: “People with spondylosis usually suffer from mild pain that follows the traditional style, and they feel severe stiffness for about half an hour to about an hour in the morning, then the pain is generally hidden, and they enjoy a degree of pain -free movement until midday, then the pain gets worse with evening.”

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis usually does not cause pain until after the bone fracture, but bone fractures in the spine is a common cause of long -term pain, according to the National Health Services Authority website.

Professor Thaker says: “osteoporosis can affect the spine and result from a decrease in the density of minerals in the bone.”

This disease is often observed in women, as the density of minerals in the bone tends to decrease as menopause approaches, then symptoms of osteoporosis appear after about 10-15 years, as the bones become weaker over time.

“As for the pain resulting from osteoporosis, the movement is useful, but care must be taken, as the bones may be fragile and weak, so it is usually recommended to exercise regular and low -severity, while maintaining weight endurance,” he added.

Poeping or rupture of spoken tablets

Professor Thaker says, “The spoilers are actually a very stable structure, and rarely appear in the clinic. But when they appear, they are usually associated with two types of problems.”

The first problem relates to inflammation, Professor Thaker explains that the rupture of the spine “can cause inflammation in the surrounding tissues, causing a slight immune inflammatory seizure in the surrounding tissues because the immune system does not recognize the tablets. The inflammatory seizure of this may remain a few weeks until it calms down.”

The second problem is that large tablets can press nerves in the spine, and this affects the function of the intestine and the bladder.

Professor Thaker says that the problem of large disk swelling “is that it can press the nervous tissue of the spine, and it may be very dangerous if you press what is called the so -called Persian, the nervous tissue at the bottom of the spine, which may affect nervous control in the intestine and bladder.”

Therefore, bowel and bladder function disorder may be associated with back pain. This may be an urgent medical condition, because if you do not ask for medical care quickly, the problem may worsen and the patient is infected with incontinence.

Psychological factors

Some research indicates that there are specific psychological risk factors associated with back pain, and Professor Thaker says that psychological factors such as stress enlarges pain, but do not generate it.

Sam explains that the compact physical and psychological treatments are especially effective, and she says: “In integrated psychological and physical programs, people practice exercise, but they also review a psychiatrist who gives them his opinion, then talks about education about pain, and provides them with some advice.”
