A Jordanian fan died and eight others were injured as a result of a stampede of thousands of people who came to watch their country’s matches against Algeria in the Roman Coliseum in central Amman, according to a Jordanian security source.
The media spokesman for the Public Security Directorate said in a statement, “Nine people were taken to the hospital at dawn yesterday, Tuesday, after they were injured during a crowd crowd inside the Hashemite Square,” adjacent to the Roman Coliseum, where giant screens were installed, attended by thousands of Jordanians to watch their country’s national team’s matches.
He added, “One of the injured people soon died and was referred to forensic medicine to determine the cause of death, while the rest of the injured received treatment and their conditions are good and moderate.”
A medical source indicated that the age of the deceased was estimated at about twenty years.
Thousands of Jordanians gathered at dawn on Tuesday to watch their team’s second match in the 2026 World Cup, against Algeria, from the Roman amphitheater, which dates back to the second century AD and can accommodate about six thousand people, where giant screens were set up to broadcast the match.
A ministerial source told Agence France-Presse that “the number of attendees was more than ten thousand people.”
