The Argentine presidency announced today, Wednesday, that President Javier Miley decided to withdraw his country from the World Health Organization, noting “profound differences over the management of health affairs” and “the political influence of some countries.”

“The president assigned Foreign Minister Gerardo and inherits the withdrawal of Argentina membership from the World Health Organization,” presidential spokesman, Manuel Adurni, said at a press conference.

He added that Argentina “will not allow an international organization to interfere in our sovereignty or our health.”

The spokesman pointed to “Differences” regarding the Department of Health Affairs, noting, especially to “the epidemic that led us under the government of Alberto Fernandez (2019-2023) to the longest health stone in the history of mankind”, and to “the lack of independence in the face of political influence of some countries.”

He added that the withdrawal from the organization will give the country “a great flexibility to implement policies that adapt to the context and interests of Argentina, and to save more resources, and will confirm our path towards a sovereign state in health matters.”

The Argentine decision comes in the wake of the United States declaring its withdrawal from the World Health Organization.

US President Donald Trump signed a decree stipulating his country’s withdrawal from the organization after his inauguration on January 20.
