Some activists on social media promote solutions to a problem related to a hormone height in the body called cortisol, which is the hormone that is sometimes called the tension hormone. But is the high cortisol shouting and treated by activists, or is it a diagnosis of real disease?
Dr. Treisha Pasrisha – in an article she wrote to the Washington Post – explains that the height of the cortisol does not constitute a health problem for most people, despite the allegations scattered on the Internet.
Health influencers blame the cortisol in a group of symptoms, including bloating, fatigue, irritation and excessive swollen faces. But these allegations stem from excessive simplification – sometimes distorting – how our bodies work. In fact, the designation of the cortisol with the “stress hormone” is a little misleading.
What is the function of the cortisol?
Cortisol – which is a stereroid hormone – is manufactured from cholesterol. The cortisol hormone is secreted in response to stress, and this hormone does not cause stress.
Cortisol helps to manage the body’s reaction, and often plays an anti -inflammatory role. Chronic tension effects are organized by cortisol and many other molecules and hormones.
The cortisol also plays many vital roles throughout the day. For example, cortisol helps to release glucose (blood sugar) in the bloodstream when you need additional energy, and helps you wake up in the morning.
Who came first: tension or cortisol?
Contracts from the research have proven that chronic tension – our bodies’ reaction to emotional and physical challenges – affects our health, as it can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 1.6 times. It appears that the events that cause childhood stress have a significant effect on the risk of developing puberty.
But it is important to know that most scientific studies were measuring stress using questionnaires, such as those that deal with stress, abuse or social isolation. The levels of cortisol in the blood or saliva were not eager. Although there are some situations where the level of cortisol is useful, the levels of cortisol are not a measure of chronic tension.
In studies looking at the levels of cortisol and luxury, the researchers did not find a direct link between them. There is also a wide range of levels that can be considered normal, depending on the rhythm of the daily biological clock, the drugs that a person may take, the presence of other diseases and even routine activities such as exercise.
Can the cortisol make your face swollen?
Some social media users claim that you can remove the high cortisol and reduce bloating in your face. These allegations are often accompanied by images before and amazing to the person’s face. They are called “the face of the cortisol”.
But the “cortisol face” is not a real thing, at least as it is usually described on social media by healthy people.
This began – like many fake wellness shouts – with a seed of the truth. Where very high levels of steroid hormones in the body can lead to Kushing syndrome. This can happen when the adrenal glands produce a lot of cortisol, or when someone takes high doses of steroids for a medical cause, such as autoimmune diseases or cancer.
The signs of Kusheng syndrome, among other things, include significantly round face. If you are worried about the Kusheng syndrome, it is important to discuss this with the doctor. But in most cases where high doses of steroids are not taken, it is unlikely that this is the answer, as Kushing’s disease is rare, and it affects approximately 40 to 70 people out of a million.
The reality of the pictures of the “cortisol face” before and after, the most obvious interpretation is the general weight changes.
