The Jordanian Ministry of Health announced yesterday, Monday, the emergence of laboratory results confirming the registration of a case of monkeypox infection in a non-Jordanian person residing in the country.
The ministry said in a press statement that the infected person is a 33-year-old male who showed symptoms of infection in the form of pimples (skin rash). He is currently in isolation at Al-Bashir Hospital, and was diagnosed by a PCR test in the Ministry of Health laboratories. His health condition is stable, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
It is worth noting that this is not the first case that Jordan has dealt with. A case was recorded on September 8, 2022, and routine procedures were followed in such cases, which were sufficient to prevent the spread of infection and the patient’s recovery without any complications.
Last month, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern, its highest level of warning, over the emergence of a new strain of monkeypox virus.
In the same month, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that more than 14,000 cases of a new strain of monkeypox had been recorded in Africa this year.
The outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed 548 people since the beginning of the year.
The M-box strain has recently been detected for the first time in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya.
Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, fatigue, chills, and a chickenpox-like rash on the hands and face.
