Real Madrid will meet Atalanta of Italy tomorrow, Wednesday, in the European Super Cup match in the Polish capital, Warsaw.
Real Madrid will play in the competition, which was first officially launched in 1973, for the ninth time, after winning the Champions League title last season for the 15th time in its history, following its victory over Borussia Dortmund of Germany by two goals to zero in the final match, enhancing its record as the club with the most titles in the tournament throughout history.
In contrast, Atalanta are participating in the tournament for the first time after their historic and unexpected victory in the Europa League title last season, following their 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, with Nigerian star Ademola Lookman playing the lead role in Atalanta’s coronation by scoring the team’s three goals to snatch Atalanta’s first European title, which was also the team’s first title on the local or continental level in 61 years.
Real Madrid hopes to win the European Super Cup for the sixth time and hold the record as the club with the most wins in the tournament, which it currently shares with Barcelona and Milan.
Real Madrid did not make many deals during the current summer transfer period, despite losing two of its main pillars, Toni Kroos and Nacho Fernandez, but French star Kylian Mbappe joined the team after years of trying.
For its part, Atalanta will try to achieve a surprise, as it did in the Irish capital, Dublin, in the Europa League final, when it inflicted the only loss on Bayer Leverkusen in Germany during last season in all competitions.
Atalanta did not achieve the desired results during its friendly matches in preparation for the new season, as it tied (2/2) with Dutch club Alkmaar, before suffering two heavy losses against Italian club Parma (1/4) and German club St. Pauli (0/3).
