Social media platforms in Egypt and Jordan were filled with widespread praise for the professionalism of Jordanian medical personnel and rescue teams, following their success in achieving an exceptional medical achievement of finding the leg of an Egyptian young man that had been amputated in the waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and replanting it with complete success.
The details of the horrific incident go back to the weekly day off of the young Egyptian man, “Mustafa,” when he was swimming in the waters of the Gulf of Aqaba.
In a sudden moment, a speedboat approached him at high speed without its captain noticing. In a desperate attempt to survive, Mustafa made a quick decision to dive under the boat, but the hull collided with him, breaking his ribs, before the disaster occurred, as the engine fan struck his leg and completely amputated it, causing it to sink into the depths of the sea.
Under the influence of extreme shock that made him forget the pain of a serious injury, Mustafa was overcome by a terrible fear for his future, to the point that it prompted him to try to search for his amputated leg himself in the water.
The Jordanian Civil Defense teams quickly intervened and were able to control the situation. The young man was calmed down and immediately transferred to the hospital, while the divers teams launched a complex underwater search mission.
After two hours of continuous searching, the divers’ efforts were successful in finding the leg.
The rescuers showed great professionalism and decisive quickness by placing the amputated limb directly into a cool box to preserve it. This is a precise emergency procedure that preserved the vitality of tissues and cells and prevented their damage during the transportation period.
Immediately after the amputated limb arrived at the hospital very quickly, Mustafa was admitted to undergo a very delicate and complex surgery.
The medical team succeeded in stabilizing the bones, reconnecting the arteries, and suturing the veins and nerves, which ensured the complete and proper return of blood supply to the leg.
Widespread praise for “Al-Nashama”
As the story of young Mustafa spread, reactions filled with praise poured in across social media platforms.
Jordanian and Arab activists wrote: “The beautiful country, with its emergency preparedness, ambulances, divers, and surgeons, and the speed of their response… really deserves all the appreciation and praise. Thank you to all of us, and many thanks to God for the safety of Mustafa.”
