Abdul Salam Heikal, the Syrian Minister of Communications, announced today that his country has joined the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), after signing its membership charter, with the organization’s Secretary-General, Dima Al-Yahya.
Minister Heikal said in a post on his account on the X platform: “Our participation in the organization will be effective in a way that achieves Syria’s interests, supports its digital growth, and opens new areas of cooperation with member states.”
He added that the approach was clear during the organization’s delegation’s recent visit to Damascus and its keenness to closely review the current stage and the programs for developing the communications and technology sector that the ministry is working on, indicating that Syria believes in the purpose and objectives of the Digital Cooperation Organization in providing a fair opportunity for everyone in the field of the digital economy.
At the beginning of this month, the Syrian Minister of Communications signed an agreement with the Digital Cooperation Organization in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, with the aim of enhancing cooperation in the fields of digital transformation, developing infrastructure and digital services in Syria, and supporting technical cooperation and exchanging experiences between the two sides.
It is noteworthy that the Digital Cooperation Organization was established in November 2020 during the Group of Twenty (G20) meeting at the initiative of several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Pakistan. Its permanent headquarters is located in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
