Tomorrow, Thursday, the competitions of the first edition of the Qatar Classic Chess Cup Championship will begin. The tournament is organized by the Qatar Chess Federation until September 4 at the Qatar Training Center.
The Chess Federation indicated, in a statement, that the tournament will witness the participation of 50 male and female players, with participation limited to Qatari players, both male and female.
The participants in the men’s category are led by international master Hussein Aziz, along with a group of Qatari national team players, including Khaled Al-Jumaat, Irfan Mohammed, Ibrahim Al-Janahi, Fahad Al-Mansouri, Abdul Aziz Al-Mahasneh, Turki Al-Kuwari, and Mohammed Al-Qassabi.
For women, a group of players are participating, including Aisha and Ghada Al-Khalifi, Rawda and Lian Al-Qassabi, Fatima and Asma Al-Hammadi, Aisha Al-Naimi, and Noura Al-Sulaiti.
Mr. Hamad Al Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Federation, confirmed in a special statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the kick-off of the first edition of the Qatar Cup Championship will be at 5 pm, as the championship, which is witnessing a large participation, aims to increase the popularity of chess among Qatari men and women, and to create a competitive environment for players.
Al-Tamimi considered that the new championship comes within the Federation’s plans to bring about a qualitative shift in the game, and expand the scope of selecting the best players to represent Qatari chess in the upcoming events, noting that the preparations are going well and all arrangements for the start of the competitions have been completed.
The Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Federation explained that the tournament will be included in the Federation’s tournament agenda on an annual basis, in order to strengthen the game’s base and build a generation that supports the national teams.
Al-Tamimi said at the end of his statements to QNA that all participants will have the opportunity to assess their level in order to double their concentration levels in preparation for the upcoming Arab and continental events.
