The US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infection linked to eating cucumbers in several states.

The outbreak of infection is linked to American cucumbers grown by the Agrogato company in Sonora, Mexico.

68 people infected with the salmonella strain were reported from 19 states as of November 26. Of the 50 people for whom information is available, 18 of them were taken to hospital. There were no reports of any deaths.

Salmonella bacteria cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Of the 33 people interviewed, 27 reported that they had eaten cucumber.

Sunfeed Produce, Baloyan Farms and Ross Davis have begun voluntary recalls of shipments of cucumbers.

The FDA is working with companies that have initiated cucumber recalls and with their direct customers to determine whether additional recalls will be necessary, and the FDA is also cooperating with additional importers who have acquired cucumbers grown by Agrogato.
