The Federal Center for Nutrition in Germany said that binge eating disorder is a disorder that falls within the common eating disorders, where patients suffer – as the name suggests – from repeated binge eating episodes.
negative feelings
The center explained that patients eat large amounts of food in a short period of time, noting that binge eating attacks occur regardless of feeling hungry, and are often accompanied by negative feelings such as self-loathing, depression, or guilt. Patients also often eat alone and hide their disordered eating behavior from others.
The center added that binge eating disorder is due to several reasons, such as low self-esteem, self-hatred, and emotional problems such as loneliness, personal conflicts, or stressful events.
dire consequences
Binge eating disorder often has serious physical and psychological consequences, as it leads to obesity, which in turn increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and back and joint problems.
Psychological consequences include social isolation, depression, anxiety and fear disorders. In the worst cases, it may lead to suicidal thoughts due to dissatisfaction with body shape and low self-esteem.
To avoid these dire consequences, binge eating disorder should be treated in a timely manner, which includes losing weight by adopting a healthy lifestyle based on healthy nutrition and regular exercise and physical activities, in addition to psychotherapy, which aims to identify the causes of binge eating to prevent its occurrence, and help patients develop healthy eating habits.
