The World Health Organization expressed concern on Tuesday about the production of antibiotics in many countries, and issued recommendations regarding the safe production of antibiotics for the first time.
The World Health Organization said that many active ingredients from pharmaceutical factories often end up in wastewater and the environment, which can promote the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
If these bacteria infect humans and cause an infection, there are almost no effective treatments against them.
Antibiotic resistance also develops due to overuse or premature termination of treatment.
The recommendations are aimed specifically at producers. They need to strictly control their wastewater and ensure its safety, said Kate Medlicott, a wastewater specialist at the World Health Organization.
