Lionel Scaloni will play his 100th match as coach of the Argentine national team when he leads it today against Cape Verde in the round of 32 of the World Cup in North America, in a new stop in a golden era for the “Albiceleste”.
The 48-year-old coach was able to transform a team led by the legendary Lionel Messi into a machine that won titles in South America and on the world stage.
Scaloni was a relatively unknown name with limited coaching experience when he succeeded Jorge Sampaoli on an interim basis weeks after the 2018 World Cup.
Since then, he has led the team to win two Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and achieved victory in “Vinalisima”, the continental match that brings together the European and South American champions, in 2022.
But his most notable achievement was leading Argentina to win its third World Cup title in Qatar in 2022, after defeating France in an exciting final on penalties.
