Meta announced the addition of support for voice and video calls to the “WhatsApp Web” application, which works via Internet browsers, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through the browser without the need for the “WhatsApp” application on the phone or computer.
The move comes to expand the capabilities of WhatsApp Web, which was previously limited to exchanging messages and files, while calls were available via phone and computer applications.
Meta confirmed that WhatsApp Web calls will be free and protected by full encryption between both parties, without time limits, while providing a call log and the ability to share the screen during video calls.
The company added that the feature targets users who rely on work devices or shared devices that do not allow the installation of applications. It also brings WhatsApp Web closer to video meeting platforms, as it allows video calls with up to 32 participants.
Meta also added new features to calls, including a “waiting room” to control the joining of participants, improve call quality and reduce noise, in addition to the ability to transfer the call between the phone and the computer without having to end it.
Meta has begun gradually rolling out the new calling features to WhatsApp users around the world, with the aim of reaching more accounts successively.
